ABOUT KATE
A writer with a focus on female-driven, diverse content for film and TV.
As a biracial woman with Japanese and English roots, Kate is interested in writing about identity and belonging. Frustrated by the dearth of Asian and mixed narratives across media platforms, Kate aims to give a voice to underrepresented groups by upending stereotypes in clever ways and finding the threads that bind us all.
Kate is drawn to the concept of unexpected connection when creating characters and stories, acknowledging the difficulties we have in embracing our collective humanness these days. She often tackles social themes through projects with broad appeal and complex but relatable characters.
Kate was recently selected to be a participant in THE STORY INCUBATOR LAB and granted a fellowship award to complete work on a hybrid family drama/horror feature. Prior to that, her dark comedy pilot WE ARE FAMILY was a 2022 STOWE STORY LABS / MAVEN SCREEN MEDIA FELLOWSHIP finalist and a quarterfinalist for THE WRITERS LAB. A comedy feature she co-wrote about competitive moms called MOTHERF*CKERS also placed in the top 10% of the 2021 ACADEMY NICHOLL FELLOWSHIPS competition.
A graduate of Brown University.
Kate earned a degree in Political Science with a focus on international relations and spent a year in England writing papers on diplomacy and game theory. There was no doubt she was going to become a lawyer…
Until she took a costume design class during her senior year at Brown, which led to a job as Colleen Atwood’s costume assistant on the feature film adaptation of Toni Morrison’s “Beloved”, and eventually landed her in a fashion design program at Parsons in New York City. Kate spent her 20s working in the fashion industry and has written a comedy pilot - a modern riff on the tale of the underdog - based on her experiences.
A recovering event planner.
Someone once described event planning as executing a feature film production in one take and they weren’t wrong. But Kate loves a challenge. She helmed her event company, CALDWELL, for 15 years - designing and producing events for individuals and corporate clients including LACMA, FOX, and C Magazine.
Kate has always enjoyed bridging the divide between the creative and operational sides of a business. Her experiences working with a line producer on Jonathan Demme’s THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and as a co-producer on the short MILES AWAY taught her the importance of balancing budget and vision which is something that she now carefully considers when writing her screenplays.
A native Angeleno born into a family of filmmakers.
Kate’s father, Tak Fujimoto, was a celebrated DP. She loved reading his scripts from a young age and sees her writing as a reflection of life coming full circle. However, instead of reading her dad’s scripts, he’s now reading hers.
Kate lives in Los Angeles with her husband, son, and their 16 year old rescue dog.
